Building Owner – Residential

Where can I find a quality builder?

Carrying out any kind of construction work usually involves a significant cost, with relatively small jobs costing thousands of euro. Anyone spending that kind of money wants to get the job done right.

When it comes to picking the right construction company it is difficult for the public to know what they are getting. At the moment anyone can pass themselves off as a builder or construction operative, even if they are unskilled or have zero construction experience. This has led to poor work being carried out, which can cost a lot more in the long run. No one wants to hire someone who does not follow the correct procedures and cuts corners.

By using the Construction Industry Register Ireland, CIRI, the public will be provided with a list of construction companies, sole traders and builders who have demonstrated they are competent, experienced and meet the other eligibility criteria. Although this registration is presently voluntary since March 2014,  it will be made mandatory for all contractors to register on CIRI in 2015.

You can search for contractors on the Construction Industry Register Ireland (CIRI) website click here.

All types of construction contractors can be searched for – from house building and retrofitting to plumbing, glazing, plastering and more.

Remember look for qualified and experienced craft workers who have good references on energy efficient retrofits and new builds and who have evidence of recent upskilling in this area. Dont forget to obtain a fixed price contract and look at their completed and even better, partially completed works to view their workmanship.

What is QualiBuild?

The QualiBuild programme, which was established in November 2013 as part of wider efforts to create employment in the sector and to assist Ireland in achieving the EU 2020 energy efficiency target, is also working with Governmental Departments and relevant agencies on its proposal to make it a requirement for all Irish construction workers to undergo such training and up-skilling at a National Level.

QualiBuild is an initiative to add transparency to the building sector and to improve standards by providing training for those employed in this sector and a register for those who want to employ an approved level of craft worker.  The core aims of QualiBuild are to Upskill, Train and Improve across the industry.Read more

What is Quality Building and why is it important?

Quality Building results in comfortable, healthy buildings that are an asset to the owner.  If you are investing your time and money into a project, you want a result that shows good value for money and performs well.  One way to achieve this is through energy efficiency measures that will future proof your building.  This means that as regulations around energy become more stringent, your building will still have a good energy performance (using less energy) and feel less impact on your pocket as energy prices rise.

New building regulations set very strict requirements for energy efficiency of buildings. These will radically change the way we build. Every person involved in building design and construction, from the craft worker on the building site to Architects and Engineers and property professionals need to understand their role in how to properly comply with these new regulations.
